Europa League • Rio Ave-AC Milan Preview: Across the River

There is one more 90 minute match before Milan are qualified for the Group Stage of the Europa League, and that match is in Portugal tomorrow. Our playoff round will be with Rio Ave, who play in the Portuguese first division. There is no second leg, no second chance, so Milan can make no mistakes. We step in the water, and we are committed to going across the river.

One more river to cross

Podcast: Winning and Corruption

Milan have kicked off their season in much the same way they ended the last season: winning. So refreshing to have the results, but also the personnel and performances that Milan fans have been dreaming of for so long. However, outside of Milan, it is business as usual. Jesús and I discussed Milan's great start to the season as well as the corruption in football outside of Milan.

Winning.

Crotone 0, Milan 2: Steady

Milan continued their string of great performances with another win, another clean sheet, and another three points. This in spite of missing Ibrahimovic at the front and Romagnoli at the back. Also in spite of two very young players getting their first Serie A starts with Milan in Tonali and Brahim Diaz. And, even in spite of wearing the most horrible Milan kit in recent years. Crotone did their best to attack, but with only one shot on target, i Squali seemed more toothless and much less the aquatic predators they are named for. Meanwhile, Milan remained steady.

Steady.

Crotone-Milan Preview: Swimming with the Sharks

Milan are playing twice a week now due to the Europa League qualifying matches. Having played a tough match on Thursday, the team travel to Calabria to face the newly promoted sharks, Crotone. They are coming off of a tough opening loss, but have home advantage and rested legs. If Milan are not careful in this match, we could be swimming with the sharks.

AC Milan 3, Bodø/Glimt 2: Valhalla

Fallen Viking warriors in Norse mythology are said to go to Valhalla, in Asgard, the highest honor for a warrior. Bodø/Glimt may have fallen in battle tonight, but they are anything but dead. Their warriors fought bravely against a Milan side with historic European DNA, and they never gave up. Milan may be moving on to the playoff round next week, but Bodø/Glimt deserve the football version of Valhalla.

Europa League • AC Milan-Bodø/Glimt Preview: Fate of the Gods

Ragnarok is a series of events leading to a great battle in Norse Mythology. Perhaps that battle will be tomorrow, when Milan take on Norway's league leaders, Bodø/Glimt. In our path to Europa League qualification lies the reigning Eliteserien champions, who currently lead this year's table by 16 points, with 12 rounds to go. They face a tough AC Milan side, though, that features a couple of vikings of our own. Maybe it's just the fate of Europa League qualification at stake, but I would like to see an epic battle on the pitch at the San Siro, the fate of the Gods.

Hmmm... they don't look like fierce Vikings...

Milan 2, Bologna 0: Human Again

Milan won their first match of the season for the first time since 2017, which shouldn't be an accomplishment, but it is. With a brace from Ibrahimovic, Milan defeated a scrappy Bologna in front of 1,000 fans. Having fans in the stadium was even more of an accomplishment. It almost felt like we were human again.

Milan-Bologna Preview: From the Heart

Sinisa Mihajlovic holds a special place in many Milan fans' hearts. He was the one who fought to bring Romagnoli to Milan when Berlusconi wasn't wanting to pay the price. He was also the one who gave Gigio Donnarumma his start at the age of 16 years old. Mihajlovic was then unceremoniously sacked with only six games left because of personal differences with Berlusconi. The man has a massive heart beneath a notoriously tough exterior. So when he battled Leukemia, had bone marrow transplants, and tested positive for COVID-19, all in the past year, Milan fans were rooting for him. As a player, and as a manager, he always speaks his mind, but lives his life from the heart.

Still in our hearts

Podcast: Start it Up

It's the start of another season, so there is so much to talk about as far as news, the transfer market, friendlies, and our first Europa League match. However, this season is different than many of the recent seasons in that there are so many good things to talk about for once. Miguel and I all of this as well as some of our predictions for this season.

Ready to go

Shamrock Rovers 0, AC Milan 2: Don’t Put Pineapple on Pizza

Milan's marketing team scored a big loss today, as they promised to have the game accessible on their app in countries it was not being televised. That did not happen. Luckily, AC Milan's players are much better at doing what they promise. Which ended up being a fail for Shamrock Rovers' sponsor PaddyPower, because they tried to troll AC Milan with the giant banners in the stadium. I guess the lesson learned today is don't make promises you can't keep, and don't put pineapple on pizza.

This will always be your downfall

Europa League • Shamrock Rovers-AC Milan Preview: Testing Our Luck

On Thursday, Milan step back into European Competition by putting our foot on the second rung of the ladder as we climb back up to where we want to be. This second qualifying round of the Europa League will be played in Dublin, as we face Shamrock Rovers. Playing away, and not having kicked off the Serie A season just yet, we will be testing our luck.

Milan 20-21 Away and Third Kit Review

Milan’s team is so much better than their kits this year. In fact, the kits have gotten worse at an equivalent amount that the team has gotten better. And the team has improved so very much. The away kit in particular is so very bad that I almost opted to break eight years of tradition and not even write about it at all. But then I realized that, like human rights issues or endangered species, this was an issue that I could not keep silent about. So, armed with my fashion design degree and expertise, here is my advocacy against the travesties that are our away and third kits for this upcoming season. You’re welcome.
Don't harm people or animals, and don't wear these kits

Grazie, Asmir Begović

This was supposed to be a welcome back post, or perhaps a player profile post that I had been waiting to write until Begović came back to Milan. It almost seemed a foregone conclusion that he would return, given how well he fit in at Milan and all that he brought to the club in addition to being an excellent, experienced goalkeeper. However, Milan made a different choice, seemingly because of finances, and now this is a farewell post instead. Grazie, Asmir Begović.

The Goalkeeper Dilemma

After Mirabelli massively fumbled the Gigio Donnarumma renewal, burdening us with €6 million in wages for the kid, a second keeper that made €3.5 million in wages, and a third keeper who makes €1 million in wages, we knew this would be problematic going forward. What other Serie A team pays over €10 million in wages for their goalkeepers? Now reports say that Gigio is asking for €10 million annually for a contract renewal, and we still need a second keeper. That is assuming that we keep Antonio as part of the package. How does Milan make this work financially, without sacrificing results on the pitch?
Two overpaid keepers don't mean we need to underpay a third

Youth Season

Friendlies don’t ever give any solid indication of how a team is going to play competitively, let alone how a season will go. They are often played while many of the more senior players are on International duty, or still on vacation after an International tournament. They are also typically played during the mercato, before a team is set. Most importantly, though, friendlies can give a coach a chance to give some minutes to younger players, even Primavera players. This makes for the most compelling reason for fans to watch preseason friendlies. That is why this time of the year is youth season.

Milan's future is very bright with talented youth like this

Podcast: Why Milan’s Glory Days Are Still Here

People accuse Milan fans of living in the past when we speak of our seven Champions League trophies. But did you know how much those glory days are still alive and influencing football today? Or the potential impact they will have on football in the future? Rui and I caught up on all things Milan, then dug deep into the amazing number of former Milan players who are keeping Milan’s glory days very much alive.

Still winning

Remember July?

It seems like a distant memory. Milan’s season was just restarting, and newspapers were repeatedly reporting that Ralf Rangnick to Milan was a done deal, even though none of them knew in what capacity he would be coming. For those of us who opposed this move from the start, these are horrible memories. Rumors swirling, fans disrespecting Maldini and throwing him under the bus for some German guy who never even won a single Champions League trophy. Disrespecting Pioli and our team, who were fighting to finish out the season. That was July.
